The Magdalene by El Greco

This magnificent representation of contemplative solitude is part of the tradition of penitent figures intended for Spanish oratories and private collections. Provisionally designated under the title “The Magdalene”, this canvas reflects El Greco’s genius for expressing repentance and mystical fervor through an isolated figure. The painting cleverly combines carnal beauty and pure spiritual aspiration, offering a poignant visual meditation on the fragility of earthly existence in the face of the promise of eternal salvation.

A young woman with long, wavy red hair is seated in the center, her torso partially bared and one hand delicately placed on her chest in a sign of devotion. Her translucent face is turned towards the upper left corner, staring intensely at a luminous gap that breaks through the dark clouds of the background. She is wrapped in a heavy blue-grey mantle that drapes the rest of her body with elegance. To her right, leaning against a large rocky block adorned with a branch of climbing ivy, rests a large open book on top of which is placed a human skull, a traditional symbol of earthly vanity. The landscape on the left opens onto a distant and obscure marine horizon line.

The refined technique transpires in the subtle treatment of the fair skin and the silky texture of the hair cascading over the shoulders. The artist demonstrates an incredible pictorial ability to melt contours and make the divine light spring onto the character’s face. It is a work of great delicacy.
