The Creation of Donald after Michelangelo

This striking work humorously revisits one of the greatest masterpieces of Western painting visible in the Vatican. By parodying the famous scene from the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the artist proposes a modern and anthropomorphic version titled “The Creation of Donald”. This oil painting combines respect for the theological composition of the original work with the colorful universe of classic comic books from the golden age of animation.

The major difference lies in the replacement of sacred figures with Disney’s famous ducks. Donald Duck replaces Adam, lying on a green mound, draped in a simple blue cloth. On the right, Scrooge McDuck embodies a benevolent God suspended in the air, supported by his three nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie within a swirling purple cloak. Both ducks eagerly stretch their white wings, ending in feathers mimicking human fingers, in anticipation of an imminent contact. The vibrant palette of bright, highly saturated colors, typical of modern cartoon style, contrasts sharply with the hazy cloudy background and the earthy tones of the original classical composition.

The painter demonstrates remarkable mastery here by blending the jovial, highly expressive features of these cartoon characters with classic chiaroscuro techniques. The meticulous and delicate treatment of the flowing drapery and the soft celestial light confers exceptional depth on this parody, highlighting a classical craftsmanship of great artistic rigor.
