To modernize the romantic despair illustrated in the past, the elegant carved stone pedestal of the initial version has been ousted in favor of an authentic vintage gas pump. The tricolor device stamped with the Gulf logo features a handwritten sign bitterly announcing a fuel shortage. Entirely naked, the female figure leans heavily on this gleaming machine, her bowed face and closed eyes conveying infinite affliction. At her feet, the plump little cherub still cries hot tears, sitting on the green grass, but his distress now seems linked to the lack of hydrocarbons. The dark sylvan background brings out the dazzling clarity of the skins and metal.
