Diptych Whaam! by Roy Lichtenstein

This monumental two-panel fresco stands as one of the most famous creations of the modern art movement and popular culture. Inspired by the world of war comic books, the daring creator Roy Lichtenstein depicts an aerial combat of unequaled intensity. Baptized under the enigmatic title of “Diptych Whaam!”, this iconic work questions military violence and the representation of conflicts through mass media.

The diptych structure separates the scene into two distinct but deeply linked moments. The left panel shows a grey military fighter jet that has just fired a rocket, while a yellow rectangle in the upper left details the action in a narrative way in English. On the right panel, the shell strikes the enemy plane, triggering a tremendous detonation of stylized yellow and red flames with sinuous outlines. The onomatopoeia bursts above the explosion in large tilted yellow letters, highlighting the din of the impact. The light blue sky background is covered with a dense screen of grey dots to suggest the depth of the atmosphere.
