Two Naked Figures by Pablo Picasso

The superb cubist landscape of the famous Spanish innovator Picasso Pablo bears witness to a radical rupture with the traditional rules of landscape perspective. The scene depicts a dense forest where tree trunks and foliage are translated into sculptural geometric facets. In the center, a hill or a rock in shades of warm ochre and gold rises, forming sharp angles and broken planes. The trees frame the composition with foliage of dark blue and deep green that contrast with the warmth of the rocks. A highly schematic human figure seems lying at the foot of the trees in the lower left corner, almost merging with the rocky ground. The light strikes the side of the mountain, creating a dynamic play of light facets and pronounced shadows. The background reveals a neutral, veiled blue-grey sky.

The master’s exceptional expertise is manifested in his ability to suggest depth and relief without using classical linear perspective. His vigorous technique of the pictorial brushstroke gives the canvas the appearance of a bas-relief carved in the raw material. This work confirms his virtuosity in reinventing modern pictorial space.
