Whirling dervishes by Jean-Léon Gérôme

This pictorial work is fully part of the Orientalism movement, a major trend of French academicism in the nineteenth century. On the left, a group of musicians seated on a carpet plays various traditional instruments to accompany the mystical dance. Soft light enters through high windows, illuminating the scene in a uniform and subtle manner. The composition is structured around the circular movement of the white robe.

The artist demonstrates an exceptional mastery of drawing and perspective to represent the curvature of the sacred architecture.
