Setting Sun and Fog Eragny by Camille Pissarro

A superb pointillist painting on canvas revealing a mystical and vibrant twilight

This large-scale twilight landscape plunges the viewer into a mystical and vibrant vision where sunlight transfigures entire nature. Geniusly developed by the great painter Camille Pissarro, this masterly work designated under the name “Setting Sun and Fog Eragny” fits fully into the neo-impressionist movement through its assignment use of pointillism. Here, the artist explores the limits of visual perception by decomposing the sun’s rays into a multitude of colored dots. The canvas exudes a fascinating and poetic cosmic power.

The painting is horizontally divided into two contrasted spaces under a spectacular celestial blaze. The upper part is occupied by an invisible setting sun whose rays radiate in an immense semicircle consisting of thousands of orange, yellow, and white dots saturating the sky. In the center, a dense forest edge with dark trees forms a geometric barrier of a purplish blue and dark green. Just below, a layer of mist or thick, cottony bluish-white fog stagnates on the meadow, enveloping a small roof structure in the middle. The foreground reveals a crop field in reddish and golden hues, touched by the day’s last light.

The excellence of the know-how is revealed in the methodical and patient application of juxtaposed divisionist brushstrokes creating an incomparable luminous vibration. This virtuous artisanal technique lends a unique texture and absolute atmospheric realism to this celebration of the solar star.
