Bullfighting - The death of the bullfighter by Pablo Picasso

The viewer is plunged into the heart of an arena vibrating with energy and dramatic tension through this remarkable work. Entitled “Bullfighting - The death of the bullfighter”, this spectacular painting bears witness to the constant fascination of the Spanish artist Picasso Pablo for bullfighting games. This creation belongs to a dynamic aesthetic where the violence of the combat is sublimated by violent color contrasts and forms in perpetual motion.

In the foreground, a powerful white horse rears up, its mouth open in a whinny of terror, while its legs thrash frantically. Behind it, a massive black bull charges with fury, its dark head blending with the horse’s body in a brutal clash. A bullfighter dressed in a traditional green costume adorned with gold embroidery seems to be thrown to the ground, his purple face turned upward. A bright red muleta spreads on the ground to the left, bringing a bloody and dynamic patch of color to the scene. In the background, the stands of the arena rise under a light blue sky dotted with colorful flags. The harsh sunlight accentuates the dramatic movement and the fury of the combat.

The artist demonstrates exceptional know-how in the representation of movement and extreme physical tension. His mastery of oil painting allows him to combine dense textures and contrasting colors to translate the violence inherent in the bullfight. This work bears witness to a graphic genius and an expressive power without equal.
