This work tends towards pure abstraction. Juan Gris uses a vocabulary of geometric shapes—triangles, curves, rectangles—to create a balanced composition on a solid ochre background. One can guess a glass, perhaps some fruit, but the objects are secondary to the interplay of shapes and colors. Black, white, and gray create a solid structure, while the wood-like texture adds an element of materiality. It is a work of great purity, almost meditative, that shows Gris’s quest for a universal pictorial language, beyond simple representation.
