Horse and Donkey 2 (Marc)

This work is an explosion of movement and color, characteristic of Franz Marc’s mature style. An intensely red-orange horse rears up in the center of the canvas, its energy almost palpable. Around it, the forms of other animals, including a blue donkey, merge in a whirlwind of curved lines and colored planes. Marc abandons all pretense of realism here to capture the vital essence and primal force of the animals. The bright colors - red, blue, green - do not describe appearance but emotions and energies. The fragmented and dynamic composition shows the influence of Cubism and Futurism on his work. It is a pantheistic vision where the animal is at the heart of a vibrant nature, a symphony of pure colors that expresses the joy and power of wildlife.
