Boating by Édouard Manet

This remarkable work is fully part of the Impressionist movement, capturing a moment of modern leisure on the water. The painter Édouard Manet skillfully integrates the title of the work which is “Boating” into his composition. Through this open-air scene, the artist explores the changing light and the sun’s reflections on the river, illustrating the quest for freedom typical of the Parisian society of his era.

In the foreground, a man dressed entirely in white, wearing a straw hat encircled by a blue ribbon, holds the tiller of a dark wooden boat. His frank gaze turns directly toward the viewer with confidence, while an elegant woman sits by his side, seen in profile. She wears a magnificent blue and white striped dress and an elaborate hat adorned with a white veil. The background consists of the vastness of a deep blue water, animated by sparkling water and light ripples under a summer light. On the right of the composition, the taut sail and the mast of the vessel cut diagonally across the pictorial space.
