Camille Monet and Jean by Claude Monet

This landscape composition of tranquil strength, painted by the Impressionist artist Claude Monet, is entitled “Camille Monet and Jean”. A precursor to his famous later series, this painting shows his attraction to haystacks in the Normandy countryside under different atmospheric conditions. The work is fully in keeping with the Impressionist movement by capturing the fleeting effect of the setting sun on natural volumes.

Three massive, conical haystacks dominate the landscape, arranged set back from one another to guide the eye into the depth. Their dry straw walls catch the last rays of the sun, vibrating with touches of gold, pink, and flamboyant orange. The shaded parts, opposite the light source, are tinted with cold shades of violet, mauve, and deep blue. The surrounding meadow is dotted with touches of soft green and pale yellow suggesting the end of summer. In the background, a line of gentle hills and tall trees is outlined under a clear sky with golden reflections.

The artist’s virtuoso skill is expressed in his ability to model light and shadow solely through the juxtaposition of complementary colors. His vigorous and fragmented brushwork gives the haystacks an impressive physical presence while preserving the fluidity of the atmosphere. It is a masterpiece of chromatic analysis.
