Baptism of Christ by El Greco

This monumental and choreographic work illustrates a founding sacrament of Christianity through the unique stylistic prism of El Greco. Christ stands naked in the center, his hands joined on his chest in an attitude of perfect humility, immersed in the waters of the river. To his right, John the Baptist, an athletic figure with tanned skin, pours sacred water on his head using a shell. Angels dressed in luminous tunics in yellow, green, and red colors surround the protagonists, holding protective cloths to receive the divinity. Above the scene, a radiant white dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit, making the link with God the Father who thrones in the heavens. The heavenly Creator, bearded and dressed in white, is surrounded by a multitude of cherubs nestled in golden clouds.

The technique used reveals an incredible virtuosity in the treatment of elongated bodies and the application of vibrant touches of white light. The artist manages to create an impression of continuous upward movement thanks to his mastery of oil color. It is a sumptuous expression of his faith and his art.
