At the Races by Degas

This equestrian landscape of remarkable modernity is a superb master copy of nature

This equestrian landscape of remarkable modernity bears witness to Edgar Degas’s interest in movement and the observation of nature in the open air. Through the painting temporarily titled “At the Races”, the artist moves away from urban scenes to explore vast stretches of the countryside. This work is part of the Impressionist movement through its fluid treatment of natural light and its concern to capture the fleeting, while maintaining a constructive rigor proper to his academic heritage.

A group of jockeys dressed in their colorful racing silks ride through a vast green meadow, under a grey, cloudy sky. The horses, captured in dynamic poses, occupy the foreground while the landscape extends into a low horizon line toward a small distant town where a few industrial chimneys smoke. The colors of the racing silks — blue, yellow, red — punctuate the composition with bright touches, contrasting with the muted hues of the grass and sky. The light, diffuse and slightly cold, bathes the whole scene, emphasizing the atmospheric depth of the plain. A white fence marks a slight separation in the middle of the field.

The technical mastery of oil on canvas is revealed in the balanced management of space and the rendering of equine silhouettes. Edgar Degas’s craftsmanship shines through his ability to suggest life and movement through vibrant paint strokes. The artist here immortalizes a scene of great atmospheric truth.
