An old bearded man with graying hair is depicted sitting at his worktable, immersed in deep meditation. His right hand rests firmly on a detailed terrestrial globe, while his left hand supports his thoughtful chin, his gaze fixing on geometric diagrams traced on a sheet of paper. On the dark wooden table are arranged several stacked ancient books, a black inkwell containing a quill, as well as a metallic square ruler and a tilted mirror in the foreground. A bright light source coming from the left illuminates the pleated sleeve of his garment and his wrinkled face, leaving the back of the room in total darkness.
