Air Iron and Water 2 by Robert Delaunay

This magnificent preparatory study on paper, temporarily titled “Air Iron and Water 2”, plunges us into the creative laboratory of the artist Robert Delaunay. Through this more airy and poetic version, the painter lays the theoretical foundations for his research on simultaneous color contrasts. This work testifies to the genesis of Orphism, an innovative artistic movement seeking to express universal harmony through visual rhythm.

The work presents a much softer and more pastel version of the glowing Eiffel Tower, rising proudly in the center of a true whirlwind of luminous discs. On the left, a large, washed-out solar circle blends light yellow, green, and white, while on the right of the composition, a dark locomotive emits whitish, geometric vapors. The silhouettes of three classical bathers appear under a celestial arch at the bottom center, delicately drawn by subtle lines. The general composition uses extremely subtle gouache washes and visible brushstrokes, bathing the whole in an almost mystical and transparent clarity.

The artist reveals here an immense technical delicacy in handling light mediums on paper. His ability to layer colored veils without saturating the surface demonstrates an accomplished craftsmanship, capable of transforming a sketch into a vibrant symphony of pure light.
