Trained in the Paris workshop of François Lemoyne, French painter François Boucher became one of the most iconic representatives of the Rococo style in the eighteenth century. Winner of the Prix de Rome, he completed a formative stay in Italy before returning to establish his prominence in the French capital. His appointment as First Painter to King Louis XV and his directorship at the Gobelins Manufactory illustrate his standing at the pinnacle of royal artistic institutions.

The artist’s aesthetic is characterized by elegant curved lines, pastel pastoral palettes, and theatrical compositions bathed in warm golden light. His preferred subjects encompassed gallant mythologies, idealized pastoral scenes, and refined formal portraits. In the famous “Portrait of Marquise de Pompadour 1”, the richness of embroidered fabrics highlights the grace of his princely sitter. The vibrant canvas titled “The Birth of Venus” unfolds a swirling movement of nymphs and graceful cupids. Finally, the seductive painting “The Toilet of Venus” alongside the intimate “Blond Odalisk - Louise O’Murphy” demonstrate his mastery of voluptuous female nudes.

His role in defining decorative taste during the reign of Louis XV extended to tapestry design, theatrical sets, and porcelain patterns. Although later criticized by proponents of neoclassicism, his creative contribution remains foundational to understanding the art of living and artistic sensibility of eighteenth-century France.
