Peasant life in oil painting copies of Jean Francois Millet

A magnificent museum quality reproduction hand painted with oil on canvas for your living room

Millet Jean-François
Born in the Norman village of Gruchy within a peasant family, Jean-François Millet studied briefly in Cherbourg before moving to Paris to complete his training. Settling later in Barbizon, he became one of the founders of the eponymous school and established himself firmly within the classical realism movement. His artistic career was dedicated almost exclusively to the poignant and dignified portrayal of the rural world. The artist devoted his talent to the nobility of agricultural labor.

His distinctive style was characterized by monumental silhouettes, robust modeling, and compositions featuring soothing horizontal lines. He particularly favored hardworking peasants, bent harvesters, and contemplative shepherds working across open fields. His understated palette prioritized dark earths, deep browns, and twilight skies. In the famous composition “The Gleaners”, the fatigue of bent women expressed itself with poignant gravity. The physical effort of the worker embodied itself in “The Sower”, whereas the twilight contemplation of “The Angelus” translated universal peasant fervor. Finally, his rustic landscapes reinforced this profound authenticity.

The artist’s work permanently influenced subsequent generations, deeply inspiring masters like Vincent van Gogh. His artistic legacy remains a central reference in nineteenth-century European social and realist painting.
