Born in France but emigrating very young to the United States, Henry Farny is an illustrator and painter whose work intensely documents the American West. Trained in the European academies of Düsseldorf and Munich, he imported a classical rigor to depict indigenous peoples. His pictorial approach fits into the realist movement, moving away from romantic representations to offer a precise visual testimony of Native American culture at the twilight of the nineteenth century.

His pictorial language combines documentary meticulousness with a poetic sense of atmosphere and light.
