Working from field sketches executed on site, he composed large panoramas in his studio featuring dramatic interplay of light and shadow. His palette balanced earthy ochres, deep blues, and incandescent gold. In the artwork “The Rocky Mountains - Lander’s Peak 1”, the majesty of peaks framed an indigenous encampment. The feeling of the sublime reappeared in “Domes of Yosemite”, whereas “A Storm in the Rocky Mountains” deployed striking atmospheric contrasts. Finally, “The Last of the Buffalo” demonstrated his environmental sensitivity.

The artist’s dramatic work permanently shaped the collective representation of the American frontier in the nineteenth century and directly stimulated the creation of the first national parks.
